How to layer a knit over a dress
The fastest way to take a summer dress into autumn, and the three proportions that always work.

A knit over a dress is the most useful transitional outfit there is. It works because it changes the silhouette without changing the base.
Cropped over long
A cropped sweater over a maxi or midi dress keeps the waist visible and the line long. This is the easiest version and the most forgiving.
The knit changes the silhouette; the dress already did its job.

Chunky over slip
A heavy knit over a light, fluid dress is all about contrast. Push the sleeves up so the outfit doesn't look swallowed.
Fitted over full
A fine-gauge, close-fitting knit over a fuller skirt balances volume. Tuck the front if the knit is long.
